Emmy Morales - Events, Business Development Director, Travel Weekly

What is your current role at Northstar?
Events, Business Development Director for TravelAge West and Travel Weekly’s GTM West, GTM and CruiseWorld events.  My role is building relationships in a fast paced Event Sales environment through exhibit and sponsorship sales.

How did you get started at NTG?
I moved back to New Jersey from Florida to be closer to my parents and I was seeking a media sales role with an industry leading publishing company.
Never did I imagine I would fall in love and stay!

What is that moment in your career that you will never forgot?
At the time I was handling Classified/inside sales and my manager said “Why don’t you make some calls to this conference we acquired and do some due diligence?”
Two weeks later Bob said “Why don’t you make some calls to sell some booths - now you are in the event business!”

How many different roles have you taken on at Northstar?
Inside Sales, Classified Sales Manager, Account Manager, Event Sales Manager.

What keeps you motivated and coming back every day?
I am emotionally invested in my work and with my clients.  It’s the feeling of making progress every day towards a goal with co-workers I really enjoy spending every day with and with clients I have established real friendships with. I love my boss, she has the best laugh in the industry! I look forward to sharing my life with my NTG family.

Any advice for job seekers, thinking about joining us?

Neal Tornopsky - Associate Publisher, Digital, Travel Weekly and TravelAge West

What is your current role at Northstar?
I am currently the Associate Publisher, Digital for the Retail Travel Group. In my role I have direct responsibility for the Travel Weekly and TravelAge West digital product portfolios and budgets as well as partnering with to our content teams as we try to implement best practices.

How did you get started at NTG?
I started at Northstar in 1999 as the Classified Sales Coordinator. This gave me a chance to be exposed to both our Travel Weekly and TravelAge West brands and also gain experience balancing the needs of two separate and at the time, competitive brands.

What is that moment in your career that you will never forgot?
I will never forget the moment I was called into the CEO’s office and asked if I was interested in digital media and would I like to help chart our course. I was so excited to be a part of something so new and seemingly limitless. Since digital was such a new focus, I was most excited knowing we could build a whole new business from the ground up.

How many different roles have you taken on at Northstar?
I believe over the years I have served in 7 different roles. Wow! It was really interesting trying to remember and list the various titles I’ve had (1. Classified Coordinator, 2. Classified Sales Rep, 3. Director, Classified, Inside Sales and Digital Products, 4. Electronic Product Manager, 5. Director, Digital Media Sales, 6. Group Digital Media Director, 7. Associate Publisher, Digital). As I look back, my path has not just been from bottom up, I’ve had a lot of side-to-side change as well as I’ve focused in on new areas I wanted to grow in.

What keeps you motivated and coming back every day?
I love that my job has multiple distinct roles. Some days I come in and I’m focused on sales/revenue. Other days, my focus is on audience and traffic. There are some days where I am focused purely on the health of our product portfolio and yet others where I am a marketer. I’ve always had a wide range of skills and never could say the one thing I wanted to do in my career. Luckily, I’ve found a position where I can harness the different facets of who I am.

Any advice for job seekers, thinking about joining us?
Be ready to embrace a dynamic opportunity. Northstar invests so much into both the products and the people which has fostered a continually evolving atmosphere. I believe that one of the keys to success here is being ready to embrace change as its happening. Get on the bus but also point it in the right direction. It’s no fun just being along for the ride!
