Business Booms at Sold-Out 5th Annual Global Travel Marketplace
SECAUCUS, NJ - Travel Weekly and TravelAge West’s fifth-annual Global Travel Marketplace (GTM) event connected top travel advisors and top global suppliers for a two-and-a-half day appointment-based event July 9-11, 2017 at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"GTM’s goal is to provide travel advisors and suppliers with the perfect environment to conduct business and make amazing connections,” said Alicia Evanko-Lewis, Senior Vice President of Events, Travel Group, Northstar Travel Group. “We accomplish that goal by thoroughly vetting all of our advisor attendees, carefully curating supplier participants and letting them simply do business. GTM’s success is a direct result of our attendees’ shared desire to increase sales.”
First-time supplier attendees are impressed with the diversity and eagerness of the GTM advisors. “Most other events we attend are consortia based so it’s refreshing to see people that we don’t normally engage with,” said Hadyn Fitzpatrick, Premium Trade Manager – North America with Tourism New Zealand. “The advisors we met with came prepared with a base knowledge of our destination and wanted to know something specific for clients they have traveling or wanting to travel to New Zealand.”
The 120 travel advisors from the United States and Canada in attendance were selected from 700+ applicants. A record 123 supplier companies engaged with travel advisors through nearly 6,000 one-on-one pre-scheduled appointments, exclusive Boardroom presentations and networking events.
Advisors in attendance ranged from seasoned veterans to those who have been in the business under five years, one of whom was first-time attendee Kassey Weaver of The Joy of Travel. “I knew when I applied to GTM that it was a very prestigious event so I was honored to be accepted, especially because I’ve only been in the business for 5 years,” said Weaver. “Hearing from another agent about how the event completely flipped her business made me realize that I needed to be here to make my business grow.”
The ability to diversify and expand the supplier portfolio is the big appeal for GTM advisors. “At GTM I learn so much about suppliers I don’t know about but know I need. I now have vendors and tools in my pocket for areas where I didn’t know who to turn to, and GTM is providing that for me,” said Paula Kaisner, owner of Kaisner Travel – Dream Vacations and 2017 Ambassador. Only 20 percent of attendees are given an opportunity to return for a second year, though more than 90 percent of attendees apply.
New suppliers in the market or those seeking a new opportunity in the travel agency market find GTM to be especially valuable. “As a relatively new company our goal is to get access to travel advisors,” said Steve Calla, Vice President, Marketing for Silvercar. “GTM has a great base of travel advisors for us to talk to about our product. We’re gaining a lot of exposure at GTM, which is integral to our success.”
GTM returns to The Diplomat Beach Resort July 12-14, 2018. Sister event, GTM West, will be held May 15-17, 2018 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Travel advisor applications open in January 2018. Qualifying travel advisors must have a minimum of $1 million in annual sales for GTM, and $800,000 in annual sales for GTM West, reside in the U.S. or Canada, have a global book of business and provide supplier references.
